My Students

Shoots! Scores! Wins! My students can really win by having a set of high quality nonfiction books. It will aid in my explanation and their exploration of nonfiction reading through topics (sports) of high interest. They will discover that nonfiction can not only be informational but entertaining.

My students live in a suburb in the great state of Mississippi.

Our intermediate school (3rd - 5th grades) are made up of a variety of backgrounds and economic levels. We are considered a Title I school due to the high percentage of low income families. We have only been operating for three years, so our librarian is still working incredible hard to fill up the shelves.

My Project

Each year our school chooses a theme for the year. This theme is used to encourage students to do well on their classwork and finally at the end of the year on the state assessment. I decided to pull the theme into my classroom. One of the major objectives for my students is to be able to comprehend and interpret information from nonfiction texts. This is an area that I have a hard time getting the students to enjoy reading. I believe that if I have the students enjoying the material they will have a much higher chance of understanding the material. Students will explore the different types of sports using the books requested along with other resources such as the internet and magazines. The students will work in groups to read these books and complete assignments. They will also be using the books requested as reference materials to write a research report on a type of sports of their choice. I have requested a variety of levels because my students are on a variety of reading levels.

This project is so important because it gives students a real reason for reading.

As adults, we read everyday for a variety of reasons. Reading for pleasure is not the only reason to have a book in your hand. My students will have to locate information for their jobs, read directions to operate something or put it together, and simply prepare a meal using a recipe. This project will allow me to illustrate to students that there is a reason for reading beyond entertainment.
