Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Grab a good book, sit in a comfortable chair, and just read. Even the most challenged readers enjoy forty minutes daily of silent reading sitting in the right chairs. The positive reading experience carries over to reading at home which in return leads to increased reading levels.

My students are low-level readers or English language learners that haven't yet learned to enjoy reading.

Our school is a struggling school trying to increase literacy school wide. The students have great potential and just need a positive reading experience. With a quiet, cozy area to read, their imaginations can run wild and they will ask me everyday if they can continue reading instead of moving to the next rotation.

My Project

Creating a reading zone with great books, plants, lights, and cushioned chairs invites the students to read, eliminating half the challenge in an Intensive Reading class. With the right ambiance which the chairs help create, the students look forward to their independent reading time. The reading zone is one of the three zones in my classroom and is the favorite to most students who are reading their way to success. The chairs are a key component to the reading area, but the school doesn't have the money to supply them.

A nice place to sit and read makes a big difference to challenged readers.

A classroom environment that encourages student learning is essential, and a separate reading area will help students have pride in their classroom and to take responsibility in their learning.
