For the resources- some of them - such as the evidence tape- we will be using throughout the rest of the year and all of next year as we get to uncover various pieces of evidence and as the students learn how to properly package evidence following a chain of custody. The students will get to have the experience of being able to officially seal evidence and sign and date it. \r\n\r\nThe entomology / insect sets were a huge hit with the students! We learned about Forensic Entomology with notes and some videos to start, then students got to use the real specimen of the Blue Bottle Fly to measure them and complete their own chart showing the life cycle of the fly based on the length of the larvae. Next, the students were given crime scene specimen that had been collected as evidence from the body of our classroom's crime scene. They measured each specimen and then based on the chart they created earlier, were able to determine the stage of the blue bottle fly's life cycle. This information provided the Postmortem Interval (PMI), which helped them calculate an estimated time of death for our victim. The students expressed awe and gratitude at being able to examine these real insects up close and thought it was cool to be able to physically observe specimen to determine the time of death. \r\n\r\nThis is the last forensic test the students will be completing to finally determine the time our victim passed away. The information will help narrow down our list of suspects based on their alibis and make a final determination on who we will be charging with murder. This will then set the stage for our culminating mock trial project, where one of the students will be playing the role of Forensic Entomologist and will testify to the findings of the lab and provide the estimated time of death. I really appreciate that the students were able to participate in this lab and be able to examine real specimen up close. Thank you so much for your donation!","fullyFundedDate":1769177878895,"projectUrl":"project/forensics-lab-supplies-support/9946042/","projectTitle":"Forensics Lab Supplies Support!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Couling","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9996864_orig.jpg?crop=474,474,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1753838649414","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/couling-forensics"},{"teacherId":9214678,"projectId":9841260,"letterContent":"A duck coop and surrounding fence had become a powerful teaching moment in my classroom. By building and caring for ducks, students get to observe ecological concepts. The coop itself becomes a construction project. Even the fence plays a role, helping students understand predator–prey relationships, responsible animal welfare and the importance of creating safe, ethical enclosures for domesticated species.\r\n\r\nWhat truly elevates the experience is how hands-on it is. Students often become deeply engaged when they can interact with the natural world, and caring for ducks gives them a sense of ownership and responsibility. Tasks like maintaining the coop and managing their environment encourage teamwork and problem‑solving. Many students who might be quiet in a classroom become more animated and curious when working outdoors, asking questions, making observations, and connecting scientific concepts from our content. The coop doesn't just support the curriculum, it sparks enthusiasm, builds confidence, and helps students see themselves as active participants.","fullyFundedDate":1769177882115,"projectUrl":"project/the-quack-shack/9841260/","projectTitle":"The Quack Shack","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Ramos","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9214678"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_55839","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":2573,"numTeachers":103,"percentFrplEligible":53,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":20,"percentWhite":13,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":60,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"25.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":47.3,"schoolId":55839,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Poinciana High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Poinciana High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/florida/the-school-district-of-osceola-county/poinciana-high-school/55839"}
