My Students

Would you ever pick up a Math textbook for reading enjoyment? My students love to read, especially fantasy stories. So to interest them in Math from a reading route, I would like to provide fantasy Math books to help them to learn Math without knowing it-at least not at first!

My 5th grade students come from low-income, mostly single-family homes.

They are exposed to colorful images on TV and through activities on computers. But, they are not usually interested in anything that is black and white-especially when it comes to reading. I have realized that these children want to learn, but I have to be creative to fully engage their attention. Anything colorful and interesting draws them in. I have also seen them pick out easy reading books that teach a Math concept. They even tell me about the things they learn in these books when they are finished! The students also recommend these Math books to other students, and frequently read them together.

My Project

However, I do not have many of these engaging Math books! I would love to create a "Math Library" in my classroom so that my students have access to these engaging and educational Math books at any time. This is an excellent method to help my students learn Math concepts at school, and hopefully carry a love of Math with them throughout their future educational experiences. And, I know that exposing my students to the fun side of Math could help them to interest their brothers and sisters at home. Having this library would enable me to let the students check out the Math books and take them home. Possibly this could even distract them from spending time playing video games and watching TV. Their parents could also benefit from these resources by reading the stories to their children. I can see this as a very family-friendly activity.

Math is usually not most elementary students' favorite subject!

I really believe that having fantasy Math books to read at this early stage in their education will help them not be "afraid" of Math in later stages in their lives where everything is "BLACK AND WHITE", in more ways than one. The immediate and future impact is essential to ensure that these and future students have confidence in their mathematical acuity. Supporting this project could help many students love to READ Math!!!
