My Students

Can you remember learning how to read? I bet you learned either in kindergarten or first grade. A majority of my 1st grade students walk into my classroom not knowing how to read.

The children in my class range in age from 5 to 7 years old.

As a teacher I have never experienced a more exciting age to teach than this. They are so eager to learn and love discovering new things. Our elementary school has a diverse population with children coming from many different cultures and backgrounds.

My Project

How do you teach a child to read? That is a question I have heard often. It is a hard question to answer, as I feel there are many ways a child can learn how to read. I approach reading as an individual skill with each child learning in a different way. Some of the common threads are why I have asked for these specific resources. Building words, practicing sight words and word families are a key to helping all children build a foundation in both reading and writing. These resources will be used for whole class and independent work. They will begin using these resources at the beginning of the year and will continue to use them throughout the year.

My class and I are asking you to please consider donating to our project.

The impact on my students will be huge and last for the rest of their lives. I imagine them all going off to the world and when they remember learning how to read, they will remember these resources. Thank you!
