Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you imagine not knowing how to look up a word in the dictionary or how to find a number in the phone book? Many of my students have not acquired this skill. I want my students to be prepared.

My classes are filled with sixth graders who know how to text and many can speak two languages.

But they cannot look a word up in the dictionary. I teach in a rural, low income school in Northeast Alabama. Many of my students are ELL (English Language Learners) who do not have a chance to speak english at home because mom and dad speak Spanish only. They are eager to learn and have weak vocabulary skills in the english language. I am hoping with the help of the dictionaries we can increase some of the deficit in their vocabularies.

My Project

I want to teach my students dictionary skills that will help them throughout the rest of their lives. They will be able to learn the meanings of words and increase their vocabulary at the same time. Most of the standardized tests have a dictionary skills portion, but I cannot teach my students dictionary skills without a set of dictionaries. I am asking for a set of 15 to get us started. In today's techno savvy world our children are not having to use skills we learned in school. If they need a phone number they can "google" it! I want them to know how to look the phone number up in the phone book. If they don't know the meaning to a word they just skip it! I want them to be able to get a dictionary to find the meaning of the word. I feel with the dictionaries my students are going to learn skills that will not only help them in school but for the rest of their lives.

Please help me help my students by donating to our request.

I want to thank you in advance for reading my proposal and I hope you feel compelled to help us. My students' vocabularies can become rich with your help.
