My students need 5 sets of fun educational games to play to reinforce their learning and get them excited about learning.

My Students

Let's play to learn! My active and curious students love to play games, but do not get too excited about studying. So, let them play games in order to study! I have found that when I turn learning into a game my students learn - and are very happy as they learn.

I teach science to fourth and fifth grade students in a high poverty urban school.

I have found that by getting students interested in science I can improve their math and reading skills. Our school has little in the way of supplies and materials for hands-on learning, which our students are in need of. It is a constant challenge to find ways to keep our students actively engaged in meaningful learning activities.

My Project

I am requesting a collection of science games for hands-on minds-on active learning. Some of these are board games, others are whole group interactive games, and some are computer software for an interactive whiteboard. These games will engage my students and let them learn through play. When I make learning into a game my students spend more time on task and are motivated to participate and to learn. I only have a few games, and most of them are hand made by my students and I. My students love to play games and will work hard to finish their work to be allowed to play games. This is a win-win situation because as they are playing the games they are learning and practicing the skills they have been taught.

There has been a great deal of research released lately that proves what many parents and teachers already knew- when learning becomes a game children learn more and retain the information and skills longer.

The games also teach the children study skills they need to be successful, and help them develop the ability to collaborate and work well with other people.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
