My Students

WATERMELON! That is the philosophy we all live by, as my students are giving back to their community. With a Hallmark Card "twist" we would like to create cards with materials we cannot otherwise afford. Can we lighten and brighten your day? Let us try!

I have 10 special needs students in a public middle school in the Pacific Northwest.

They are all disabled; either mentally or physically challenged. 5 are 6th graders and 5 are 8th graders. Historically these students have missed out on the opportunity to work on art projects as they are considerably below grade level in reading,math and written language. Also their fine motor skills are low. About 75 % of their day is spent in my room. In the past we have made cloth wreaths for Veterans and helped senior citizens celebrate various holidays and festive occasions. As my students can be reluctant learners in my class, they are given the opportunity to make cards as a reward for a job well done. This gives them the chance to help themselves and others.

My Project

With the art materials, my student's will be able to make cards, practice their fine motor skills and give back to the community. They will be able to cheer up local senior citizens, terminally ill friends, and Veterans in the hospital. With this "Pay it Forward" philosophy they will realize that no matter who they are and and how old they are, they do touch lives each and every day. They will learn that they can do things for others without expecting compensation. That is why we create families and friends in our community and in our world. As Famous Amos once said in his WATERMELON Philosophy: "Whatever you believe creates your reality Attitude is the magic word Together everyone achieves more Enthusiasm is the wellspring of life Respect yourself ,as well as others Make commitments Everyday can be a fun day Love is the answer One day at a time Never give up" We won't give up!
