We dove into the Great Depression, Repatriation, Valley Fever, The Dust Bowl, and the Mexican Farm Labor Movement, linking Esperanza's fictional journey to real-world events. My students are multilingual learners, and the visuals, vocabulary, and weekly graphic novel-style comprehension pages helped support deep understanding. Their engagement was incredible—there were daily gasps, outbursts of concern, and thoughtful questions as they followed Esperanza's struggles and triumphs.\r\n\r\nIt was especially powerful to see how personally connected many of my students felt to Esperanza's story. Others were deeply moved by the injustices faced by the strikers and deported families. As we wrap up our year, students are creating one-pager projects to reflect on the themes of the novel and demonstrate their understanding. Thanks to you, they not only read a powerful piece of literature—they lived it, discussed it, and learned from it in a meaningful way.
