Readers on a Mission!

My students need books at their reading levels, white boards to practice writing, games to practice sight words and concepts of print, and big books.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Learning to love reading happens when students are surrounded by books, reading games, and engrossed in conversations about stories they love. My students need to have access to all kinds of books and games that encourage them to explore their own love of reading.

I teach Kindergarten in a school where 98% of the students receive free lunch.

The majority of my students are English language learners who are just beginning to feel confident in using the English language and are starting to lay the foundation for learning how to read. Kindergarten is the year when students begin to understand what it means to be a reader, and so many of them are excited to open and share a book with their peers.

My Project

Learning to read goes beyond looking at the pictures. Students need to look at Big Books as I read out loud, discussing the engaging stories and tracking the words with their eyes. Students need to read books at their own level, identifying sight words in the stories and reading them out loud to each other. They will play games where they learn to identify letters and words, important skills that readers need. After they read, many of the students want to become authors themselves. Kindergarten is an important year for encouraging students to write their own stories and ideas. We will practice writing letters, words, and sentences on our white boards, ensuring that each student can practice over and over. Then students will practice creating and reading sentences that they create, using sight words and engaging tactile magnets. These activities allow students to learn visually, orally, and kinesthetically - crucial learning at this age.

You will make it possible for my students to grow as readers.

They will be able to find books that they enjoy reading, and begin practicing reading on their own. They will learn to write their own stories and feel confidence as their skills grow. They will be exposed to important children's literature in a format they can access. My students are already excited to read, and now they will have this opportunity.
