My Students

How do you help children read with expression? How about introducing them to books that are fun, silly and are easy to read! It is not simple to find books at the first grade level that send a message, as well as build fluency that children need to be successful readers.

I teach in a classroom of children from many backgrounds and ethnicities.

Our population of ESL students is growing, as well as the population of special needs students. Also growing is the number of children who qualify for free or reduced lunch. The children are very eager to learn and do very well with cooperative learning. Our classroom is currently 30 children with 2 teachers, but with the budget cuts happening in our district, the number of children per teacher will likely increase in the coming years.

My Project

This was the first year that I introduced my students to the Elephant and Piggie books as part of building fluency and conversational skills. I have never seen children so excited to read books! Having multiple copies of these books will allow children to work in pairs as they practice reading with expression. This is especially helpful with my ESL students who are learning conversational English. The conversations between Elephant and Piggie are simple, yet meaningful. Not to mention silly and dramatic, which the children all love! Parents have also noticed the interest of their children in these books. It is a great way to include the parents in their child's reading, as well.

Building a love for reading early in a child's life is crucial!

These books by Mo Willems are very easy for the children to relate to and it brings the whole classroom community together. At a time when there are more children with special needs and English language learners, to find books that can bring all children together is amazing! Building a climate in the room where all children can be successful is a beautiful thing. Having multiple copies of these books will help us to get there!
