Fishing for 2 Bass Recorders

My students need 2 bass recorders.

My Students

Did you ever play the recorder in elementary school? All my music students learn to play soprano recorder in the 4th grade, but each year there are several who show special interest and ability. These students have accepted my challenge to start an after-school consort. We need basses!

My school is a public Title 1 School, meaning a large number of our students receive free or reduced lunch.

Enrollment is about 500, including 4-yr.-old kindergarten through the 5th grade. Although our district is known as one of the top in the state, this particular school is the closest in the district to the inner city, so our students are ethnically diverse, largely low-income, and often transient. The majority of them come from single-parent homes or blended families. All of this said, our students are like all other children. They love to learn new things and they have many talents.

My Project

Not having had access to piano or other extra-curricular music lessons, the recorder is usually the first instrument my students learn to play. The technique is relatively easy, the sound is good (after the first few weeks (-: ), and it is an ideal way for young students to really learn how to read music. When some students master the soprano recorder, they are really ready for a challenge. The students are fascinated by the different sizes and pitch ranges of the entire recorder family, and I love tying in the historical aspect as well. Giving the students an opportunity to combine various recorder sizes gives them experience playing in a music ensemble with their friends.

For years I have wanted to provide this musical opportunity to students eager to explore and learn more.

If we are able to get this after-school student recorder consort going, I will find places in the school district and the community for this special group to perform. My students will have a unique musical outlet that will give them opportunities to learn, make music with friends, and prepare for future musical adventures.
