Every day we hear how today's students are different types of learners: auditory, visual, kinesthetic. My students always have a hard time sitting still during class. Studies have shown that using a standing desk helps to focus students.
Every year, the class of sixth graders I have has its own individual challenges.
I love learning about their different personalities and learning styles. I relish the challenge of finding out what makes learning fun and successful for each student. Our classrooms are full of the traditional furnishings for middle school classrooms, 30 student desks, one teacher desk. I like to teach off of a rolling cart, moving around the classroom constantly. I believe that my students should have the option of how they want to sit while learning.
My Project
I want to provide my students with the option to sit on large colorful pillows on the floor, or stand at a new innovative standing desk, or use a stool at a table. I have already started the process of making large colorful pillows for the floor. I am requesting one AlphaBetter desk, which is a desk that students can stand at while working. I have also requested two stools that the students will be able to use at table I already have in my classroom.
I believe that these alternative seating options will help students to focus on their work and motivate them to do their best.
I expect each of my students to do their very best every day in school.
I recognize that they have different learning styles so I consider these when I plan my lessons. Now, I want to consider where and how they sit for their lessons. I believe that these alternative seating choices will provide the boost many of my students need.
