My Students

I teach English and Social Studies and would like to integrate the two subjects together using literature that correlates with the Indiana standards. These children love to read and discuss literature in groups, therefore, need more literature to continue these literature discussions.

I teach two groups of high achieving fifth graders in a high poverty school.

I teach both English and Social Studies to both of these groups. Both groups of students have a fond love of reading, discussing literature, and learning about history. I feel it is important to integrate both of these passions.

My Project

I am requesting class sets of novels that depict various times in US History. Each set of novels is narrated through the eyes of a child that is the same age as my students. By reading these novels, it gives them an opportunity to read, learn about history, and understand what it was like for children in that period in history.

This project is important for my students to learn about historical events while reading well written literature.

They love to read, and I find it important to find what they love and integrate other content in with that strength, and reading historical literature does just that!

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
