HELP PREVENT BORED, UNINSPIRED STUDENTS!! Help our students be able to complete hands-on, discovery based activities and track their progress.
Ashley Valley High School is a small alternative high school in a rural area.
Students at this school do not fit the typical mold and are seriously delinquent in credit and are typically not concerned about getting caught up and graduating.
Currently, all coursework is completed on computers. Students sit at a computer and take quiz after quiz for weeks (sometimes months) and after many quizzes are passed credit is issued. It is obvious why so many of our students drop out or become frustrated.
The students have been very vocal this year about their displeasure with the current offerings of our school and have inspired me to change things up a bit by offering more discovery based, hands on learning options. They have also been very vocal about their ideas for interesting projects.
My Project
Any scientist will tell you that a lab notebook is a critical element of success in the laboratory. By being able to track activities and record data as it is collected, projects can proceed in a logical fashion and troubleshooting can be streamlined.
I am requesting materials (pens, notebooks, and calculators) that will allow students to keep a log of their daily laboratory activities. The science program at our school has high hopes for initiating meaningful research projects that will inspire students to continue coming to school and seeing how science is done in the "real world".
Without lab notebooks they will not be able to experience these real world methods. By tracking their activities they will be able to look back at their accomplishments in the lab anytime they need a reminder about how hard they have worked and all that they have gotten done and hopefully feel better about their time at school.
By supporting this project, you will be directly responsible for giving non-traditional students a reason to continue coming to school.
Big changes are taking place in our science classroom to encourage continued attendance and success, but because of the small amount of money available to our school these changes can only happen with the support of generous donors. I appreciate your time.
