I Can Do It By Myself! Valuable Independent Literacy Centers

My students need various quality literacy centers, games, and puzzles to use throughout the year from beginning sounds to vowels and sight words.

My Students

"What do I do?" said the Kindergartener for the millionth time. The challenge for teaching reading for small groups is the other students must be working independently. These students should be engaged in quality activities to reinforce skills and provide structured practice own their own level.

My students come from varied backgrounds in a suburban school in Virginia.

I have students who have attended pre-school for years and other students for whom this is their first group experience. Students also vary in their kindergarten readiness. Some come knowing how to read and others are learning the alphabet for the first time. Our Title-1 school provides additional support for lower achieving students because our moderate poverty area but many students lack resources at home of books and quality games to reinforce these skills. They need as much meaningful practice in school to make up for potentially lost experiences at home.

My Project

My students are like most 5 year olds- active and everywhere! Students come with different needs and abilities. Some need letter knowledge and some are ready to spell words. These varied literacy centers will provide differentiated support for each child's level. They can easily be moved around the room or to a quiet corner where kids can curl up with a fun game and not sit at their desks all day! Also, like most 5 year olds, my students have difficulty doing activities independently. They need activities with structured support where they can easily check their own work. Give a child a marker to write words and he will draw all over himself, but give a child a stamp with missing letters and its a game to finish it. Knowing my students are engaged in meaningful literacy centers allows me to focus on small groups to provide differentiated instruction for reading. Plus, they are playing games and having fun!

These quality games will last from year to year so many groups of kids will benefit.

When my kindergarten students leave with mastery of letter sounds, blends, vowels, and sight words they will be well prepared for 1st grade. Feeling successful in reading from quality games and centers reinforcing targeted skills, my students have positive school experiences to carry with them year to year. Kindergarten is fun and our literacy centers should be fun too. A life-long reader begins in Kindergarten!
