Little Hands, Big Ideas!

My students need pegboards, counters, and blocks to develop fine motor skills.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Children learn by exploration! Typically students, such as mine, in low-income households do not get to enjoy the world as their peers in more stable environments. When children are moving and interacting with their environment, they are learning more efficiently.

My students are Spanish-speaking Early Childhood students who have been identified as having speech and/or language disabilities.

They typically are from low-income families and come from birth-to-three programs; they are transitioned into the public schools system where I come in! They currently attend my extended therapy site, where they receive three-hours of intensive speech and language therapy daily in a small group setting to learn socialization skills and better their communication skills. They love to explore and get their hands on anything! They are especially proud when demonstrating a skill they have never did before; their parents echo the same pride when they report all the new skills their children are doing at home as a result of our interventions at school.

My Project

My students are at risk for future academic struggle and/or failure because of their low speech and language skills; however, by teaching them compensatory strategies which include other modalities to explore and learn about their environment, they are potentially narrowing the gap between themselves and their typically developing peers. Developing and strengthening early fine motor skills will increase their ability to perform future functional skills and create a path for lifelong learning! Our program is very play-based to target speech and language development more efficiently and effectively. Play-based activities also open the door to strengthen other areas of development, as well as creativity and imagination! With using manipulatives on a daily basis, I am able to target color concepts, size concepts, categorization skills, multi-step directions, sequencing skills and a love for exploration!

Every student learns in a different way; fine motor activities allow me to tap into the hands-on child who needs to touch, feel, manipulate to really learn and understand.

Developing fine-motor skills at a young age sets a foundation for skills needed later in their academic life, as well as life outside of school. Children with communication delays can often develop negative self-concepts and are frustrated easily, but proficiency in other developmental areas can combat these attitudes!
