My Students

Obesity among children is increasing every year. This leads to unhealthy children and unhealthy adults. We don't do the labor intensive work that our ancestors did thus we tend to gain weight. Our children do not get to just go outside to play like we did as kids.

I teach at a high poverty inner city middle school grades 5 through 8.

Due to the surrounding neighborhoods, some of my students can not go out to play. It is just not safe! Because of that, most of the exercise that the children get is at school. While many children would like nothing more than to play basketball all class period there are some who are less competitive. This project is for them. My district, like so many others, is in a financial bind. What monies that are available are usually allotted to academics leaving classes such as P.E. unfunded. When equipment gets old and worn out, replacements are sometimes up to the teacher to get.

My Project

In a young person's heart and mind there is nothing better than a highly competitive game of basketball. While that is true for some, there are other students who do not share the intense love for the game. For them something gentler but still physically active is more their style. That activity can be bowling. Our parents did it, we have done it, now it's time for our children to learn to bowl. The project will allow me to teach the student how to bowl, how to score and social manners of bowling. Bowling can be playing by just about everyone. Any physical handicaps can be overcome by just a little adjustment in the game. So this game is for everyone.

Bowling is a social game that friends and family can play.

A fun afternoon at the bowling alley with the family can help to bring a family closer together. This project will teach the next generation what bowling is all about. And maybe, a bowling pro might be born or the next 300 game played....Please help and donate to this project.
