My Students

Have you ever expressed wonder about something intriguing which prompted an investigation? My young students are inspiring scientists who anticipate discovery opportunities and are empowered by hands-on experiences, what better way to learn about the three states of matter which make up our world!

Forty inquisitive preschool explorers rotate my classroom door daily.

I teach in a high-need community in the public sector where 85% of my students are eligible for free lunch. Our school is a math and science academy in which we aspire to nurture future scientists and engineers. Solids, liquids and gases are the three states of matter which make up our world. In an innovative learning environment young minds can grasp such basic concepts with simplicity .

My Project

The Matter Book Library will provide literary knowledge of facts and resources to promote learning. The Geometric Foam Shapes, Weigh and Play Balance, Water Pumps, Color/Liquid Discovery Tubes will become interactive tools in our Wet and Wild Lab where students will discover solid and liquid properties. The Model Magic will enable a creative dimension as my students design 3D sculptures as our "Solid As A Rock Museum" unfolds. Young entrepreneurs will emerge as the "Fresh Form Treat Shop" opens highlighting solid and liquid edible transformations. As students learn specific properties for each state of matter language development is enhanced and demonstrated as students articulate observations. Investigations are guided through an inquiry based approach: Does it have weight? Does it take up space? Does it have its own shape? As a culminating event "It's A Gas"(a balloon jamboree), students participate in challenging games which gives them a lift.

This interdisciplinary project is uniquely designed to motivate young learners to create, explore and use their senses to observe natural phenomena.

Scientific discoveries emerge through hands-on learning activities with solids, liquids, and gases fostering critical thinking skills while providing opportunities to apply mathematical concepts (measuring; weighing; estimating). Your support will make it possible for aspiring scientists to investigate and learn "What's the Matter!"
