My Students

In the school’s book closet I find, Ben’s Tooth, Bingo’s Ice Cream Cone, and many other titles… clearly missing from this spectacular room are leveled books that will really reach my reluctant, struggling readers; books about things they are interested in, such as popular icons like Spiderman.

Roger explains that he loves to read about Spiderman as he webs me with his fingers.

Charlie says he likes sharks, and he begins to list them, hammerhead, great white, etc. Drew doesn’t even catch a breath while he’s telling me about the soccer game that he plays on the weekends. I am a first grade teacher at a Title 1 public school in the suburbs of Washington, DC. Our school system, like many in this country, is seeing an influx of English Language Learners in the public school systems. These students need differentiation with additional support to help them achieve success. The fact is these children must put forth more effort to acquire the language and academic skills than their English speaking counterparts. Yet, they possess so much pop culture knowledge. If we had leveled books about the things they are interested in, rather than focusing on building their background knowledge we can delve right into these books and focus on word strategies and have engaged readers.

My Project

Our classroom is requesting multiples of leveled readers that focus on topics such as Spiderman, dinosaurs, lizards, Sponge Bob and many other books that some of my reluctant readers would gravitate towards. When the students are asked to share the kinds of books they like to read, these are the genres that keep coming up. Unfortunately when I go to our book closet to find something to satisfy their needs, there is nothing there to match their request.

The fact is, as adults we have a choice.

We can read what we like to read about. Why can't my first graders have the same opportunity? This will not only help my reluctant readers within my class, but when we're finished learning from these new resources, I can put the books back in the book closet to share with others in our school. Perhaps, kindergartners, other first graders and possibly second graders could all learn to love reading through these new and special resources.
