My Students

The American Dream is different for everyone, but for my students it begins with having actual books in their hands to read. As we explore the American Dream in English class, we would like to read Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman. After we read and analyze the text, we will act out the play.

We are a small alternative high school in West Michigan.

We serve about 200 students who have, for one reason or another, not found success in traditional high school. My students are kind and compassionate, but they are hindered by a severe lack of resources at home and at school. We are writing this grant to offset the lack of resources at school. By having the materials we need to teach, we can help students realize their potential, making their own American Dreams come true.

My Project

The main theme for Michigan American Literature is the American Dream. The only problem is that we don't have any texts to teach it! My class read descriptions of several stories and plays that addressed the American Dream and voted that they wanted to read Death of a Salesman. They also want to perform the play for the entire school when they are done reading it, which would be the first time in school history that this has happened! Please help us make this come true; put a real book in the hands of my students, and open up doors that never existed before. With an education, there is potential, and with potential, there is hope...to get these kids off the streets, being a part of something positive, and achieving their own American Dream.

Sometimes when we don't have things that regular schools have I feel like I'm at the dumb school." "I have never been in a play before, but I think this would be really cool. It would show people that we aren't all bad and that we can do cool stuff too." "This is a hard book to read but I know we can do it. I think I would like Willy's son because my dad wants me to do different things too."
