Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Forty minutes a day, 4 or 5 days a week: that is all the time my ESL students have in my classroom. Yet we accomplish a ton! We learn vocabulary words, grammar rules, writing, phonics, reading comprehension strategies, and more. Unfortunately, organizing and accessing all our hard work is a huge challenge!

My classes are made up of enthusiastic Kindergartners - 2nd Graders who are learning English as their Second Language (ESL).

My students love to learn and to produce work that demonstrates that learning - everything from literature journals and research reports to sight word sentences and grammar dictionaries. They take pride in doing their best and enjoy seeing their progressive improvement and mastery over time.

My Project

These binders will allow my students to organize their materials in an efficient way, ensuring that we maximize our ESL learning time. We certainly have no time to waste! No longer will we be scrambling for misplaced sight word flash cards or wondering where last week's writing work went. Furthermore, having their own binder and dividers will allow my students to take more ownership over their own learning. Currently, I have to store their work in a bulky folder system, and they do not often get to look over their work and reflect on their progress. Not only will my students learn organization and personal responsibility through caring for their binders, but they will also have far more opportunities to review their work and reflect on what they have learned. I believe this will invest them even more in the challenging goals we have set for ourselves.

These binders will dramatically increase our available learning time in ESL and increase my students' investment in their learning.

The skills they learn in ESL benefit them in every other academic area, and we need to use every minute to our advantage. With these binders, we will have all the materials we need for every lesson right at our fingertips. Now we can get down to business!
