Mrs. Hunt Westwood Elementary School
Enumclaw, WA Grades PreK-2

My Students

Have you ever tried to teach a small group of Kindergarteners to read while keeping 25 other kids on task? That is what I do everyday to lead guided reading groups during workstations. We need activities that the children can do on their own at their ability level so we can have guided reading.

Our school is a very diverse school with many different cultures, many English Language Learners, and a high poverty rate.

Many students come in well below grade level academically because of the lack of experience they have in preschool or at home. Because it is a Kindergarten classroom, there is a great many more students who are learning English for the first time in our classroom. I have had as many as 80% of my students learning English in my classroom in the past. This creates a classroom with a wide range of abilities and experiences. Kindergartners are so excited to learn and are like little sponges that soak up so much knowledge in their first year of school. I love the excitement my students have for learning and think that even though it takes a lot of energy and patience to teach Kindergarteners, that the joy they have in learning makes it all worth it.

My Project

Children need to be taught at their ability level, too high and they are frustrated, too low and they are bored. Workstations is a time that the children can work at their ability level in different subjects while the teacher pulls small groups of children to teach them to read at their ability level. We need two cassette/cd players and eight adaptors, phonic stamps, sight word cards, math games, and other workstation games to run a successful workstation in my classroom. I think this is one of the most important times of the day because the children get individualized instruction. However, it is also the most challenging time for the teacher because while you have 4-5 students that are doing guided reading with you, you have 25 other children who are supposed to be learning and staying on task. The only way to do that is to have materials available to them that they can work independently while learning. That means I need a wide range of materials that can be down without much assistance from teacher. These resources will help us to have workstations so I can help my students be successful.

Workstations is one of the most academically beneficial times of the day and it is often the students favorite time of the day.

Without these materials, I can not have workstations and without workstations I can not teach guided reading to small groups of students. Please donate so our classroom can have these essential classroom supplies. Thank you so much.
