Our school is a very diverse school with many different cultures, many English Language Learners, and a high poverty rate. Many students come in well below grade level academically because of the lack of experience they have in preschool or at home. Because it is a Kindergarten classroom, there is a great many more students who are learning English for the first time in our classroom. I have had as many as 80% of my students learning English in my classroom in the past. This creates a classroom with a wide range of abilities and experiences. Kindergartners are so excited to learn and are like little sponges that soak up so much knowledge in their first year of school. I love the excitement my students have for learning and think that even though it takes a lot of energy and patience to teach Kindergarteners, that the joy they have in learning makes it all worth it.
