My Students

It is increasingly difficult to engage students' interest and imagination and The Green Mile is a book that does just that.

The students in my school are mostly college bound students.

Our high school is facing extreme budget shortfalls, like most places, and many in my school are on free/reduced lunch so it is not realistic to expect the students and their families to make up the difference of what our district and state fail to fund. We are also a young school. Next year will be the 6th year we will be open so the amount of novels we have is limited. This will surely improve with time, but with the laying off of staff, purchasing more novels for the English department is certainly not a priority right now. However, there are a few titles that our English department already has; we just don't have enough copies for all the students to have a chance to read them.

My Project

The Green Mile is one of those titles. Our department has enough for 2 classes to read it at a time, but with expanding class sizes, we need more copies so more students will get a chance to read this wonderful novel. I am currently reading this novel with my 10th grade English class and they really love it. For the students to be engaged in a novel and excited about reading when there is only a week left of school is really remarkable. I am so glad my students had the opportunity to read it because it is really encouraging reading for enjoyment--not just for an assignment.

It is my hope that because they enjoy reading this book so much, it will create life-long readers, thereby greatly enriching the students' lives.

Also analyzing literature that really speaks to them is a skill they will certainly need in college and their willingness to do this for their high school teacher is even greater when they are enjoying the novel they have been asked to read. With more copies of this book, more teachers in my department will be able to have this enriching experience.
