Nonfiction Conviction

My students need an expanded classroom library of 38 nonfiction texts to support the development of critical comprehension strategies and to promote inquiry.

My Students

What if the child reading these books was led to find a solution to a global economic crisis? What if they discovered a cure for cancer through research on plants and animals. What if they became the next president or world leader through and exploration of various continents and their culture.

My students are a diverse group of inquirers that thrive on being able to demonstrate their knowledge through creative projects and captivating presentations.

I try to foster a culture of research that involves various media including books, video, Internet, and other print media. The school is a Magnet school that pulls students from all the schools in our system and brings them together to learn in a non-traditional way. Although we have several computers in our classroom where students can do research, our school library as well as our classroom library lacks a wealth of nonfiction books on my students reading level that are specifically related to the topics that we study in third grade. Students use their research to create dramatizations, raps, songs, artistic representations, PowerPoint presentations, movies, and a host of other ways to demonstrate their understanding of a concept.

My Project

With the books that you are providing for our classroom, students will be able to research a host of topics while at the same time increase reading fluency and further develop critical comprehension skills. Most students like to read fictional books and stories, however, I believe that if they are presented with a compelling selection of non-fiction texts that are of interest to them, they will develop a love for this type of reading and further cultivate their critical thinking skills. The materials will not only be used by my class but by all the third grade classes at the school and possibly teachers in other grade levels as well.

Children learn by absorbing and storing the information they encounter.

They take that information, add more information to it, draw conclusions, and solve problems. Getting this information at an early age and being able to comprehend it is critical to their future success in life. These books will give students a steady intake of information to build upon the background knowledge that they already have. It's my job to expose them to a variety of motivating nonfiction texts that are challenging
