My Students

Do you remember those early childhood experiences of tagging along with your parents at the grocery store? Did you ever transfer those experiences and play grocery store or market at home with odds and ends? Young children learn through play and modeling what they see grown-ups do!

I am very proud to say that I teach developmental preschool at both a Blue Ribbon school and a high-needs school.

All of my students have been diagnosed with developmental delays that put them at risk for school failure. With intense intervention, it is the hope of the developmental preschool program that some of my students will out grow their developmental delay. Other students could possibly be classified under another category such as a learning disability, cognitive impairment, autism, or other health impairment. Learning through play is an important component to our preschool program since we service children with both cognitive and physical impairments that are ages 3-5.

My Project

Since learning through play is such an integral component of what we do in developmental preschool, the Lakeshore Market will provide my students with opportunities to practice going to the grocery store. As a preschool teacher, I use non-directive teaching strategies such as parallel play to teach and enhance expressive language and vocabulary development. I also use play time to teach counting and the alphabet. For example, I might say to a student, "Go pick out a piece of fruit that begins with 'P'. Great. I see that you picked out a pear. Yes, pear begins with the 'P' sound! Or I might ask a student to count out three pears. If they struggle with this task, then together we would count three pears!

Your donation will provide fun and engaging learning opportunities that my students might not otherwise experience outside of a developmental preschool classroom.

It has been my experience that many parents with special needs children don't feel like they can take their children out in public due to behavioral concerns. Part of my job, is to teach functional behavior in and outside of the classroom. This piece of equipment will provide meaningful and authentic learning experiences.
