This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students have a desire to read only if it's a scary story. "The Graveyard Book," a Newberry Award winner, is the perfect answer. Quality literature that they are interested in.

The students in my class live in a rural, high-poverty area made up primarily of migrant farm workers.

Their lives consist of their school day, as well as family and household responsibilities usually taken care of by the parents. While cooking, cleaning, and taking care of siblings, their parents are in the fields working trying to support their family financially. A high-interest, scary store is exactly what they want and need to take a break from their lives.

My Project

"The Graveyard Book" is an award-winning piece of literature that will capture the interest of my students. This book will provide an opportunity for me to teach skills and strategies that will make them better readers. The scary fiction genre will hold the students' interest which will enhance motivation. Rich discussions will ensue among students of different reading abilities which will expand their vocabularies.

The school's budget does not fund the purchase of novels.

The opportunity to read a quality piece of award-winning literature will enhance learning. It will also create higher-level thinking, while developing a love of reading. My students love scary stories and will enjoy reading while learning reading skills essential to their academic career.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
