My Students

Have you ever had a jingle that stuck in your head and you never forgot it? That is what I hope happens every day in my classroom. My students love music and I love using it to teach valuable skills like days of the week, counting, number writing, letter names and their sounds. Music teaches!

My students are anxious and eager to learn the many basic skills in Kindergarten.

They love to sing and grasp the skills we learn through song much more quickly than just about any other method I have tried in my 29 years of teaching. They learn the days of the week in order by singing with Dr. Jean in her Days of the Week song, sung to the tune from the Adams family. They quickly grasp the letter names and sounds by singing The Alphabet is in My Mouth. A real favorite is Birthdays by Jack Hartman. They proudly stand when the song says Birthdays, birthdays. There such fun. Everyone have fun when your birthday comes. January, stand up! continuing until all of the months have been named and everyone has had a chance to stand up and be recognized. Music is a fun way to learn so many skills for Kindergarten aged children. Music is relaxing and provides an opportunity for children to learn in a different, non-traditional manner.

My Project

I am hoping to receive an Ipod and docking station so that I can consolidate the learning songs from a large collection of CDs. By having an Ipod, I could take all of the Math songs, Reading songs, movement songs, etc. and put them together on the Ipod. This would minimize the amount of time I currently spend switching CDs, getting to the right track before we can sing the next song. 5 year olds love to sing, but sometimes get impatient waiting for me to locate the next song for the skill we are working on. I often feel like I am wasting valuable teaching time, looking for the next learning song. Having the songs available by topic would be wonderful!

I have past students return for visits and recall events from their Kindergarten year.

The songs that we sang often enter the conversation. I know that music and singing help my students learn valuable skills that they will use throughout their education. The Ipod and docking station will assist me in making learning even more fun and valuable.
