My Students

In Chapter I of the The Great Gatsby, Nick Caraway says, "Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone, just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had." My students are very disadvantaged and criticized by society, but their potential is undeniable.

Our school is a Title I school, one which has a high percentage of free and reduced lunch and is economically challenged.

We have wonderful students who want to succeed. Whiteville High School is a small rural high school in southeastern North Carolina with approximately 650 students. Most of the teachers here grew up in the area and know the challenges that many of our students face: poverty, unemployment, broken families, and low self-esteem. Many of our students are from single-parent homes, where they are supported mainly through government funding. The average monies spent on each student in our system is $602, compared with $1186, which is N.C.'s average. WHS students are not issued text books because we do not have enough books to give them. Our students have so much potential, but it is hard to realize that potential with so many economic hardships.

My Project

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is an American classic that takes place during the roaring '20s, when extravagance ruled the United States. It is a love story that concentrates on the effects of trying to live in the past. The class set that I have right now was purchased in 1987, and the pages are literally falling out. By reading this book, my students will experience the sights and sounds of the Jazz Age, and they will be mesmerized by Fitzgerald's prose. Because of their lack of exposure to different places, students will get to "visit" this era and environment, one that is completely different from their own lives.

Although it sounds quite simple, my students need these books because they DESERVE to have something new.

Yes, this book is an excellent example of fiction that students will enjoy, but more than anything, my students need to believe that they are worthwhile and important enough to have a new book in their hands. They are surrounded with poverty, even within our school's walls, and the crisp pages and the smell of a new book will allow them to take pride in both themselves and this text.
