My Students

"I can remember the frustration of not being able to talk. I knew what I wanted to say, but I could not get the words out, so I would just scream." Temple Grandin. These ipod Touch devices will help the students in my classroom express themselves and increase their organizational skills.

My students are in a Lifeskills classroom.

They face challenges and obstacles just like everyone else, but often have difficulty expressing themselves effectively. These devices will aid in their everyday lives and be socially appropriate within their community and school. Many of these students already know how to operate a computer or other handheld device with little assistance. This device would easily allow them to transition to something that they can carry on through their adult lives.

My Project

With this ipod Touch device, I will be able to assist students with their academic goals, social goals and simply their own leisure activities. My staff and I will be able to assist these students in creating age-appropriate visual schedules, reading assignments, daily task lists, assistive communication supports and leisure applications. With this device, students possibilities will be nearly endless. If a student is having a difficult day, he or she will be able to choose their visual schedule or have a portable music station right in the palm of their hand. This immediate capability will provide an easy relief of stress for these students.

Students in this setting are often thought to be limited by their disability.

They are too often given devices that are bulky and too heavy for them to carry around. With an iPod Touch, they will not have to carry around a bulky device or be noticed by their communication and organization device. They need to fit in just like everyone else!
