We Need Henrietta Lacks to Help Us Learn Biology!

My Students

In teaching it is very common to hear students say, "Why do I have to learn this?" or "How will this ever effect my life?" It is my personal goal to bring relevance to everything I teach my students.

My students attend a suburban high school in Northern California.

We are a large school of about 2600. The area is fairly middle class, but my students come from very diverse backgrounds. I have students who come from single parent low income homes and students who are from very high income high education level families. The great thing about our school is that we are able to work to serve all of our students well. We strive for each and every child to become college eligible so that they can have a multitude of opportunities in life. This is why the majority of our students take biology. We want all kids to have the best, most rigorous education possible in order to increase their chance for success.

My Project

The book that I would like to have for the students is called the Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. This book chronicles the life of Henrietta Lacks, a poor southern tobacco farmer, a descendant of slaves whose cells unknowingly became one of the most important tools in modern medicine. Her cancer cells were taken without her knowledge and became what scientists call HeLa, the first immortal line of human cells grown in culture. HeLa cells have been vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovering secrets of cancer, viruses, and the effects of the atom bomb; helping lead to important advances like in vitro fertilization, cloning, and gene mapping. To this day Henrietta Lacks remains virtually unknown. This story will allow my students to have a glimpse into the life of this woman and allow us to examine the connections between the dark history of experimentation on African Americans, the bioethics, struggles that her family has had to endure and legal battles over who controls cells.

The opportunity to integrate this book into my curriculum will not happen without your donations.

There simply is no money in the budget to fund "extra" materials. However, being able to bring this kind of relevance to the classroom is vital. Being able to read material that demonstrates how science affects our lives and the lives of others helps students to comprehend subject matter. It brings a real life quality to the class that can not be accomplished by textbook learning or experimenting.
