My Students

I am the librarian of an inner city Expeditionary Learning (EL) school, grades K-6. EL is a method of instruction that emphasizes high achievement through active learning, character growth and teamwork. Students engage in Expeditions, which are in-depth studies that address a topic or theme.

Our sixth grade students are studying the deciduous forest and freshwater biomes in their Science Expedition: Learning and Living With Where the Wild Things Are.

They have read a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts exposing them to the Natural World (one of our ten Design Principles). These students have read and thoroughly enjoyed Hoot and Flush by Carl Haissen. These are two entertaining and interesting books that allow students to learn how we care for species and our waters. Our urban 6th Graders will take part in a free overnight field study to the Muller Field Station, located nearby where they will take part in several science investigations of the deciduous forest and freshwater biomes.

My Project

The book Scat by Haissen chronicles the story of students losing their "feared" teacher, Bunny Starch, on a field study. Where is she and what happened to her? We have a total of forty sixth graders and we are asking for a total of 20 books, with the thought of sharing the books between the two classes. Our students love to read, and since they are familiar with the author, they can't wait to read this new book. As a teacher, I love the fact that it ties in beautifully with their Expedition.

My library budget is only $1,000 a year.

I don't have money to buy classroom sets (or half a classroom set) and with budget cuts, my budget looks even more dismal for next year. These books will not only be used by this current group of sixth graders, but also for students for years to come. The books will be housed in the library and accessible to all students. Thank you very much for considering this proposal.
