I Can't Find a Book I Like!

My students need book bins and 2 all-purpose organizers.

My Students

My students have learned to enjoy reading this year. However, they have a HARD time finding books in my classroom library. They can't find authors and genres of books they enjoy when they only see the spine of a book. Using book bins, I could organize my books so they can search independently.

My classroom is very diverse with over 55% getting free and reduced lunches.

We have many ethnicities represented in my classroom and at school. In addition to working with low income students, we have a large ELL and Autism inclusion program. We are a kindergarten through 8th grade school and in the first year of introducing our full middle school program. My students are a very caring group that find security and consistency at school. We strive to help meet all of their needs.

My Project

Our school has made a commitment to helping our high needs students by providing each student with a book at their reading level. In order to implement this program successfully, I need book bins to help make selecting a book a more independent process. Many of these students do not have access to books at home and we want to create a culture of reading at school. If students learn to have a passion for reading, it helps improve their reading skills which transfers into all content areas. I will help take students on book walks so that they can become more independent in choosing books that are at their level and that interest them. After learning this strategy, I will help them transfer the skills towards the school library and public libraries.

I work with low income and ELL students who do not have access to a lot of books at home.

I hope that by organizing my classroom library and making different genres and authors more accessible, I can help create a culture of reading in my classroom. Being able to read is one of the more important skills students can learn in school. It helps increase their vocabulary, teaches them new subjects, and improves their skills in all content areas. The more students read the better they become at it!
