Healthy Hearts: A Basketball at the Tips of Athletes' Hands

My students need 6 basketballs to increase their heart rate and work on individual technique.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time you stepped onto the court? How nervous you were to finally put to the test your "mad" skills you learned at practice? I want my athletes to have the ability to improve their individual technique by putting a basketball at the tips of their hands.

I currently work with students, grades 7 and 8 (approximately 70% free and reduced lunch eligible), in a small rural community in northern Maine.

I also coach middle school athletes, grades 6 through 8, in soccer and basketball. State and federal funding cover limited program offerings for students in our local community. Funding for supplies is kept at a very basic level. Although outdoor activities are abundant in rural Maine, proper instruction, and basic fundamentals for competing in basketball are considered above and beyond the core curriculum.

My Project

Our students love to compete, and I want to improve their chances for success as they mature, as well as increasing their overall fitness, by supplying my student-athletes with 6 basketballs, specifically women's 28.5 inch indoor basketballs. These new basketballs will replace torn, worn out basketballs that often bounce sideways or not at all.

Although Title-IX provides for equal opportunity among both girls and boys in athletics, often girls do not have available to them the same quality of equipment as do male athletic teams.

I want to put a basketball in the hands of every player on the team to improve their technique, increase overall fitness, and in general provide healthy heart opportunities.
