My Students

We have taken a course that just seemed to be insurmountable. The only reason that you were able to get through it was with the help of your teacher and a lot of hard work! Chemistry is that impossible course for the majority of my students and yet they need a decent grade to get to college.

My students attend a suburban high school in Northern California.

We are a large school of about 2600. The area is fairly middle class but my students come from very diverse backgrounds. I have students who come from single parent low income homes and students who are from very high income high education level families. The great thing about our school is that we are able to work to serve all of our students well. We strive for each and every child to become college eligible so that they can have a multitude of opportunities in life. This is why the majority of our students take chemistry. We want all kids to have the best, most rigorous education possible in order to increase their chance for success in college. The majority of our students take Chemistry while they are at our school. The course for many students, is an incredible challenge. The students are still very concrete thinkers at this age and it makes grasping the abstract concepts of chemistry very difficult.

My Project

We need a class set, 29 books, of the Complete Idiot's Guide to Chemistry to assist in learning complex chemistry skills. These books will be another tool to help my students comprehend some of the more complicated concepts in Chemistry. I work very closely with four other chemistry teachers and we have already implemented peer tutoring and made our own chemistry website for students to use as a resource. I would like to have a class set of these great books for us to approach chemistry from yet another perspective. A number of students are financially able to hire tutors but many more are not able to. Year after year I struggle to find ways to help students who do not have the luxury of hiring that private tutor. Many of the students are second language learners and this more basic guide to chemistry will help them tremendously.

This project is important because it will provide us with a resource that is at the cognitive level of these students.

While my students are very capable the class is very abstract. This "Complete Idiots Guide to Chemistry" was written by a chemistry teacher and is much more understandable than our textbook. This will help the students apply the information they are learning in chemistry.
