My Students

"Teachers open the door, but you must enter by yourself." -- Chinese Proverb -- It is my wish to encourage and inspire my students to want to walk through that door! This year, we have a challenging new math curriculum. We also lost our Science Lab teacher and need more hands-on learning activities

I teach a wonderful and inquisitive group of 20 first graders in a Northern California suburb (but next year, there will be 28 students in each class).

Most of them tend to be visual and kinesthetic learners who learn best using multiple modalities of teaching, especially visual aides and hands-on materials. This is normally the case for our primary students every year. The diversity of our school population has grown greatly over the past 10 years. Each year, we have more students who come from ELL/bilingual households. First graders are a complicated breed! Most of them are just learning how to read, so they are becoming much more independent learners and thinkers. They are inquisitive about our world and how things work. At the same time, they are working on controlling their bodies and expanding their attention spans. Children these days are used to being bombarded with stimulation, visual and otherwise. Competing with video games and Hi-Def is tough work!

My Project

With the use of a document camera, I will be able to open up a whole new world of learning to my students. The ability to show my students any visual medium at a moment's notice would be simply amazing! I foresee the ability to be able to capture and maintain their attention for longer periods of time, as well as inspire their curiosity and love of learning. The hands-on math manipulatives and science lab materials will help them learn the challenging subjects areas by seeing and feeling them. This will enable them to explore all academic areas further and help develop a deeper understanding. Our school, district, and parent community have high expectations for all of our students, especially in math, science, and reading. The faculty at our school is very well-educated, professional, and caring. We strive to have a good working relationship with the families at our school, as well as the surrounding community. We rely on and appreciate parent support to help supplement our classrooms.

Every day, my colleagues and I strive to live up to the high expectations of our families, community, and especially, the ones we have set for ourselves.

In today's day and age, it is critical that we keep up with technology's lightning-fast pace and all the benefits it affords us. Your generous donation will help me to ensure that our children are not left behind. The door is open...you can help to draw them in. Thanks for your consideration!
