The Medium is the Message! Art & Writing Materials, Please?

My students need colored pencils because our old ones were quickly sharpened down to nubs, and composition books!

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The medium is the message, said Marshall McLuhan many years ago. Color makes life POP, and my students in Cultural Geography need to use color to illustrate and complete mapping projects. Crayons don't work for our projects. They also need composition books in which to write daily logs.

Our school spends too much money painting out gang graffiti, and not enough on school supplies.

You and I cannot change that. Our city was recently listed as California's most dangerous. For safety reasons there are few windows to the outside. But as dismal as this sounds, most all of our students are great hearted, loving, curious, energetic, and creative humans with stories to tell and places to go in life when they pull themselves out into college. Our daily routine at our school involves mentioning college each class period, and I discuss college sports, not the pros. I talk about all the fun I had in my fraternity, and how my credentialing college is in the Sweet Sixteen! They listen raptly. When people donate to our school, students are usually amazed that people out there actually care about them enough to give. This act of generosity works wonders on their spirits.

My Project

My freshman class is Cultural Geography. We make maps, color maps, draw colored lines on maps, and shade in pencil drawings of Ohlone Indians, gold miners, Chinese railroad workers, Spanish missionaries and Californio rancheros. We map slave states and free states. We draw pictures of genocide in Laos and Cambodia, Guatemala and El Salvador. We look at old photographs of Armenians, and not so old photographs of Jews, and recent photographs of Palestinians. My students know about Jim Crow, Abe Lincoln, Rosewood, Florida, and Jessup County, Mississippi. I have created guides for each unit we cover in this course, and this serves as a plank for the students to use to complete the necessary vocabulary learning to read and comprehend Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, or the San Francisco Board of Supervisor's Special Report on Chinese in Chinatown, c. 1888. Over the course of this year, they will learn more than 800 new, academic words.

Visual learners need to color in the countries, states, and continents.

They need to track immigration routes - trails, shipping channels, canals, railroad right-of-ways, and flight paths. They need color to make their sketches come to life, and WE HAVE NO MORE COLORED PENCILS. The school will not supply us any, either:~< My students also need composition books to keep in class to record their daily thoughts, responses to writing prompts, and take Cornell notes. We have none.
