NEW SCHOOL YEAR - NEW MUSIC CREATIONS

My students need 90 musical recorders.

My Students

My students love music and I would like to introduce the recorder to these students. They are so eager to learn new musical concepts and with this recorder, many music concepts can be accomplished. They will learn to sing what they play, read music, improvise, and even create their own music. The

I teach in a very poor town in South Carolina.

Many of the students go home in the evenings with parents at work and they are left to take care of themselves. The students do not even have supplies at the beginning of the school year, but we have churches and community agencies who help out with this problem. We have 75% of our students on free/reduced lunch. It would be impossible for them to purchase their own recorders. I feel this is a excellent way to enhance the music program at our school. I have seen uninterested students turn around when a recorder was given to them and I have witnessed success in these students. I have seen talented students excel in recorder playing of which I provide an extra class before or after school to enrich the lives of these students. Many music standards and concepts can be taught with the recorder. The students would learn to read music, improvise, and create their own songs

My Project

The soprano recorder is a small instrument that is easy enough for 4th grade students to play. I will introduce students to the recorder through echo-playing whereby I model and the students copy me. I will then play musical phrases which I call question and answer which actually leads them to improvise. When I feel they are ready, I will play a "question" and I have them give (improvise) the "answer". Improvising is so much fun for them. We will play small, simple songs and they learn to read G-A-B on the staff. During all this time, I have reviewed quarter and eighth notes. I will then guide them to use G-A-B and create their own songs. This is most rewarding for these students.

Your contribution to this program would be very much appreciated.

The students learn the National Standards through their playing. The focal standards addressed are singing on pitch, playing instruments and music from various genres, learning to read notes and symbols, improvising, and creating music. The impact is indescribable. They are impressed with themselves that they are able to read music and also improvise. The best part is when they write their own song.
