My Students

We live in a society of uncertainty; it is our job to provide our students with stories of the human experience; they need to understand life outside of themselves. These two novels do an excellent job in providing teenagers with that perspective.

Our students are Southern CA teenagers with a wide variety of multi-cultural backgrounds.

Most have never left their community and providing them with reading material outside of their comfort zone, opens their mindsets to rest of the world. The human experience through literature is a safe way to explore other cultures.

My Project

We use these novels along with non-fiction essays and news articles to expose our students to the human right issues around the world and here in CA. Not only do we analyze the literature, we apply the human experience to their lives and make personal connections with the characters.

These books "The Kite Runner" and "East of Eden" are a great start to any school year, due to the fact they are high-interest.

Once they relate to the story, they see the value of the characters' experiences to today's world and make the connections back to themselves easily. By the end of the unit, we find they are more apt to understand the human experience. Their knowledge of how to look at different parts of the world is reflected back to the role of the teenager within different cultures as well.
