Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Black and white photocopies! That is the story of our lives in my classroom. Everything has to be copied these days because we cannot write in our colorful workbooks. The budget crunch has hit our school hard. But imagine if the students could each week receive a colorful magazine of their very own!

Most of the students in my class are either English language learners or have parents who speak little English.

Language and socio-economic status are both major factors in our day to day lives. In fact, 82% of our students are poor enough to receive free lunch daily. Most of their parents are immigrants with dreary, low-paying jobs. This year many parents have reported to me that they've lost their job while some are working two, even three jobs, just to make ends meet! Ever stayed at a fancy Florida hotel? Our Moms and Dads may have made your bed or cooked your meals. Despite all of this, my students are vibrant and eager learners!

My Project

One item that has really made a difference in my classroom this year has been the weekly arrival of the Weekly Reader and Time for Kids magazines! Last year my project to get subscriptions for these two magazines was fully funded. Weekly Reader is a magazine that has been around for a long time. I remember it well from when I was in grade school. But I have to say that it surprised me how much the students loved these magazines. In fact, several of my students have saved them all in a folder in their desk. They take them out from time to time to read them again and again! In a classroom where everything comes to them in black and white photocopies or workbooks they can't use, having your own full color magazine to keep is, well, in the words of of one student, "really cool!"

If this project can be funded again this year, the incoming class can benefit as my students have benefited this year.

If only you could see how their faces light up when they see me walk in the door with that familiar packet containing the latest issue of Weekly Reader or Time for Kids
