Reading All About It! – Building a Journalism Program!

My students need a HP Pavilion computer to start a school newspaper.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school has no journalism class, no school newspaper, no literary magazine, and no website. Normally, such conditions would be tragic. But, in the South Bronx this is commonplace. In fact, I know of no schools in our area with Journalism programs, let alone a school newspaper.

I have done what I could to address this.

As coach of the debate team, I created our school's only website. I also put together a bimonthly newsletter with several student articles and photos devoted to our school's theme. There’s a section devoted to law activities – our award-winning debate and mock trial teams. There’s a section devoted to student government and student political projects, and there’s a section devoted to community service projects. But our scope is small. We do not have enough computers to have all students research, type, or edit a newspaper. We only have my personal printer, and so I am able to make only enough copies until the toner runs out. It would be my dream come true to have the resources to invest in a regular monthly school newspaper. I am trying to write grants to purchase computers so that our students have the ability, opportunity and resources to do anything any wealthy school to do.

My Project

A school newspaper promotes student literacy, media, photography, technology, broadcasting, filmaking, public speaking, current events, politics, civics, writing, reading, editing, publishing, computing, interviewing, and critical thinking skills. A school newspaper brings the school and wider community together. In order to do this we need classroom computers. We have no computer lab at our school. We have ancient desktops that no longer work in our classrooms. A computer lab begins with one computer, and so that is why we are writing this proposal. Even with just one desktop computer we can have our student editors use it for writing articles, research, editing, layout, design, and publishing. Even with one desktop computer we can empower a student editor to lead a small team of students to create our school newspaper. Even with one desktop computer we can create a Journalism Center in our classroom devoted to covering our school and community. It always begins with one.

A student journalism program is necessary for a democracy.

Students need to learn their First Amendment rights. Students need to learn how to question and seek the truth. Students need to learn how to fight for what they believe in. Students need to know the world around them. So I write this proposal to bring back “justice” by building a student journalism program to educate the next generation of citizens, activists, and leaders.
