Modern Poetry

My students need 1-2 copies of 7 books of poetry, including "World According to Dog: Poems and Teen Voices" and "With Their Eyes: September 11th- The View from a High School at Ground Zero".

My Students

A few days ago, I went to the poetry section of my English classroom library looking for a book. I had already realized that most of the students ignored that section. I quickly learned why.

I teach a 7th grade collaborative team teaching class.

This means that 40% of my students have learning disabilities, speech/language disorders or autism. The majority of my students absolutely love to read and quickly find new books that they are interested in.

My Project

I would love to restock the poetry section of my classroom library with books that will be read. My students are at an age where while they should still love Shel Silverstein, he does not need to be their favorite poet. I would also love to have books by authors that they do not know about. This way, they will be able to see that there are modern poets and poetry does relate to them and their current lives.

Having a revitalized poetry section would help inspire my students to read poetry.

They love to write poetry, but have not yet found very many poems that they want to sit down and read outside of what is assigned in class. Your donation would make it possible for an amazing group of 7th graders to find a love of poetry.
