Reluctant Readers Need High Interest, Young Adult Literature

My students need 30 copies of "Stuck in Neutral," a critically acclaimed, high-interest, young adult novel.

My Students

Our students are alternative high school juniors and seniors who are reluctant readers and learners.

Many of our students come from urban homes and have been plagued by many of the challenges that tend to accompany living in such an environment, such as poverty, gangs, teenage pregnancy, high truancy, drugs, etc.

So, to help us be more successful with these kinds of students, especially at the high school level and with boys as reluctant readers, we need high quality, high interest young adult literature that these students can easily relate to.

My Project

Stuck in Neutral" is a book that teens can relate to. It has won awards for the Young Adult Literature category, and it has also been on the IRAs (International Reading Association) book list of current, best young adult literature. Girls usually are more attracted to reading, even learning, in general, but getting something that the boys are also excited about is the challenge, and this is a book that teen boys love.

The importance of this project is all about literacy and getting the students more involved with reading.

High interest books, such as young adult literature, help our students to read more and to enjoy more what they read. In the end, the hope is that by getting our students to enjoy reading in the classroom will also help them to continue reading outside the classroom and to become life-long, independent readers and learners.
