This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

One of the first things my biology students always ask is when do we start dissecting things. Other years when we had a budget I could tell them last quarter when we investigate human biology, but this year we don't have the funds to give them that experience.

My students are from one of the toughest neighborhoods in California.

All the news stories about the place we live in is negative and when I tell people I've been working at this high school for over ten years they act shocked. I tell them that even though we have a reputation for being tough I have some of the sweetest students. I have to defend our kids because the outside world thinks the worst of these kids and its not all their fault!

My Project

My past students will come to me years later and ask what we are dissecting this time. We've done everything from pigs and frogs to rats and cats. Many students have not showed any interest at all in the field of Biology except for the dissections and they really do step up for this unit. Every year I've been able to get my students interested in the subject of human biology because of the similarities in the specimens we dissect, but this year we ran out of money and I hate to think my biology students will not have the opportunity to experience how fascinating the mammalian body is. I am requesting 30 rats to use for this project.

Biology is the study of life and no matter what your ethical or moral stand might be on dissections, I've witnessed year after year the importance of this particular learning opportunity in appreciating the intricacies of our living bodies.
