We Are Off To Read Some Poetry

My students need 30 poetry journals and a guided reading activity book.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a poem? My students have started to discover poems and I would like to expose them to a variety of styles.

My students are such an eager group and have a yearning to learn.

My students are first graders. We are a Title One school with a very culturally diverse group of students. We have 95% of the students receiving free lunch. We have started to read some poetry and visualize what pictures come to our minds. My students enjoy finding the rhymes in the poems as well. We are even trying to connect it to our phonics program. They try to find the particular sounds and spellings we are working on for the week.

My Project

I am requesting poetry journals for my students. These journals have a wonderful and age appropriate group of poems. The journal also has areas for my students to respond to the poems. Having these poetry journals will give my students opportunities to reread and revisit the poems that we work on in class. They will also be able to keep this journal and refer back to it. They will be able to bring it home and share what they have learned about a particular poem.

Having these poetry journals will expose my students to another type of literature.

Please consider supporting this project and give my students exposure to a different type of literature. Poetry in first grade is a fantastic way to learn new vocabulary and to think beyond the box. They will learn to use their imagination more.
