Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"At the age of six I wanted to be a cook. At seven I wanted to be Napoleon. And my ambition has been growing steadily ever since," stated Salvador Dali. The elementary art students I teach are hungry for art knowledge. In order to help my students' art ambition my classroom needs an art library.

I teach in an area full of great Hispanic pride and culture, but the neighborhood where my students live is one of very low income.

The students are positive in their minds and hearts when they enter into my art classroom, but when they go home they do not have the funds for books and other supplies that could aid in a proper art education. Over 80% of the school is on free and reduced breakfast and lunch. Many of the students are given school uniforms because their families can not afford them. My students are so positive and work so hard with what little they have, but they have not been exposed to the world of art fully the way I, as their art teacher, wish them to be. Their families are unable to afford trips to art museums and galleries so all the art the students see comes from my classroom. Many of my students have goals to be artists when they grow up. The environment in which I teach can be challenging, but the students I teach are very inspirational and deserving.

My Project

My students want to learn more about artists and art history. With what little resources I have, I do my best to share with my students the world of art. The tools that would help my art room even more are artist biographies and DVDs. Hearing real life stories about artists growing up, being the same age as my students, and creating art as they grow up would be so inspirational to my students. Right now the students make small connections with artists when they see master artworks, but I want and need them to be more connected. The DVDs and books would be a teaching tool to greatly help in this connection. The art timeline would be a great teaching aid on my wall. When I teach about a specific artist or period, the timeline would be a wonderful frame of reference for my students. They could then make connections from my words to an actual timeline. Making connections in the art classroom so that students better understand the arts is vitally important.

My students want to learn, there is no doubt in my mind about that.

But my students need more tools and technology to aid in their learning. I believe that there are donors like you out there that believe in a great art education. I am striving my best to help my students get the best art education they possibly can. With your help my students will be able to read about artists in books and on the timeline and watch movies about them in order to better their connection of art in their lives.
