My Students

Have you ever seen teenage boys fight over who gets to read a book first? I have. When I bought the Hunger Games for my classroom library, my boys went crazy over it.

My students are all from rural Missouri, and most are very poor.

They rarely see new books at home, and our library can hardly keep up with the demand for relevant literature. My 9th grade class is over 80% male, and next year's class is not much different. They are bored by Romeo and Juliet, but they loved the Outsiders. Please help me give them something to read that is both relevant and entertaining!

My Project

I am requesting a class set of the Hunger Games. Having this set will allow me to truly show my students how reading can be more than just something you do for homework- we can take the analytical process we use in classroom literature and apply it to a book they want to read for fun anyway. In a group of reluctant readers, this book will have them reading, and excitedly reading at that, on grade level.

I was blessed to grow up in a family that placed a high value on reading.

I was surrounded by books. My students are not. They have such hard lives, I want them to have something new and exciting for once. I want them to see that their school wants to give them the best, not just the best we can afford.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
