Our Students Go to Boston!

My students need museum admissions, a tour guide, whale watching cruise tickets and a pizza lunch for our trip to Boston!

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are taking our "Young Leaders" group to Boston this year!

This group consists of 20 very special third through fifth graders who are academically advanced compared to their peers.

They think beyond the obvious, read against the grain, memorize easily and solve puzzles and problems with ease and with great pleasure. Although this sounds wonderful, these youngsters have shown signs of boredom and frustration in regularly-paced classroom settings. We created this program three years ago to better serve these students' individual needs and developed a rigorous five-part screening process to select the candidates. We now meet with them weekly to work on thematic units, collaborative team projects and individual studies based on their interests. Additionally, we provide them with the tools needed to "survive" in their regular classrooms by teaching them to challenge themselves and set goals to further push their own learning. In their sometimes difficult home lives, they are not given the attention they crave and the exposure they require.

My Project

Two years ago we took the Young Leaders to our nation's capital, Washington D.C. We funded this trip through a massive and intensive fundraising effort that took nearly two whole years. Last year we intended on taking the group to Boston, but put the brakes on the project after the school's budget was cut the some of the parents faced job loss. This year we have raised enough money to pay for the bus and the two dinners. Our wonderful parents have collected enough to pay for the hotel rooms. Unfortunately, we have tapped into all our resources and now need to reach beyond our immediate school community. We need to purchase admission tickets to the Salem Witch Museum and the New England Aquarium. We also need to pay for our 90-minute private tour of the Freedom Trail. Next is the 4 hour long whale watching cruise that requires tickets. And finally, we need to provide a pizza luncheon upon our arrival to the hotel.

In order to make this trip possible and a huge success, we need your help!

The activities planned will engage their senses, lift their spirits, fill their minds with content knowledge and reward them for their effort and dedication to their academic career. This trip will be unforgettable not just for the students but for their parents, who rarely have the opportunity to leave Brooklyn and explore what else America has to offer!
