We Need Netbooks!

My students need a class set of netbooks to conduct research during inquiry-based learning experiences.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How can eager students develop strong research skills in a technology-driven world if they don't have the technology to practice on in school?

I teach at a brand new, small public high school in New York City that is specifically designed to help high-needs, at-risk students prepare for the future.

The philosophy of the school is to promote learning through student-centered problem-solving activities wherein groups of students work, with rigor and intention, to solve open-ended, thematic research questions all day long, each school day. Through this process, students learn to problem solve, research, reason, and interpret data; this is an invaluable skill-set for any college or career bound scholar. Unfortunately, our problem-based learning process will not remain a sustainable school practice if we do not acquire more Netbooks; as this is our first year, we will soon double in size as a new class of freshman comes in. We will not have enough technological resources to suit their academic needs. Thus, I implore you to help my bright students, and the new ones I will meet next year, and the year after that, and the year after.

My Project

Imagine: Students writing. Students reading. Students speaking. Students thinking. Students conducting all of these learning activities exclusively through the lens of technology. Netbook keyboards flutter as student fingers dance across the letter keys as they enter search terms into browsers and search for credible sources. Students cite websites in source lists. Students create blog updates on articles of note. Groups conference over assignment drafts via Google Docs. Students create online forums to post their work. Students share across online school communities and networks. Students grow. Students learn. Students want to come back and do it again tomorrow.

Our school is a place filled with hope and potential.

We are growing, and with growth comes pain - the budget is small, but the dreams of our students are enormous - help us coach them as they reach for those dreams; donate Netbooks that will serve hundreds of students now and for years to come!
